36.4 Effective Mega Pixel, 35mm Full-frame Size CMOS Sensor
35mm full-frame size CMOS sensor (35.9mm x 24.0mm) supported by approx. 36.4 effective megapixel is adopted which the high resolution is achieved from its size and which the noise tolerability is well performed with high sensitivity. As the dimension size of 35mm full-frame sensor is 1.5x bigger than that of APS-C, the depth of field becomes shallower. With the increase of the resolution and the size of image sensor, you can enjoy a very high resolution image with a wide range of bokeh expression. With the increase of image sensor size, one pixel size is also enlarged to 4.88µ with 35mm full-frame when 3.91µ with APS-C size sensor. With this increase, as the sensor could collect more light, S/N ratio is improved to give more resistance with noise. Of course, K-1’s sensor is AA (anti-aliasing) filter less to fully utilize the image quality of the sensor.
PRIME IV, Newly Designed for 35mm Full-frame
Newly designed, 14-bit imaging processing engine PRIME IV is adopted. The operating frequency is improved approx. 150% from PRIME III giving a high-speed processing. Additionally the tuning is adjusted prior to high image quality processing. Algorithm of noise processing is improved which effectively deleted the low-intensity noise, which produces precise description with shadow and high ISO shooting.
High Sensitivity, ISO204800
Highest ISO in this class, K-1 has achieved ISO204800 with the combination of the sensor with a high noise resistance and with new PRIME IV. By processing the dark stable with a PENTAX algorithm, not taking all the noise off but leave some to give natural texture, the quality of high sensitivity is good enough for usual shooting.
Pixel Shift Resolution
As the Pixel Shift Resolution was well accepted with K-3 II, we have also adopted this function to K-1. This is the system apart from the conventional Bayer system, which only captures single unit of color data in each pixel. Pixel Shift Resolution captures four images of the same scene by shifting the image sensor, using the SR mechanism, by single pixel. With this, each pixel captures all colors to give you a super-high-resolution images with much finer details, while significantly lowering the level of high-sensitivity noise.
With K-1, we have advanced a step further. With the conventional Pixel Shift Resolution, the camera and the subject needed to be stabilized, which the usage was too limited. With the new Pixel Shift Resolution, we have added a new function, Motion Correction, which corrects the moving objects. With this function, when PRIME IV detects the moving object, that section of the image will not be composed but use only one image out of four taken images.
AA Filter Selector
Thanks to the built-in SR system, by using the microscopic vibration of the image sensor unit during image exposure, generates the same level of moiré-reduction effect as optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter. Unlike fixed optical AA filters which always creates the identical result, this innovative simulator allows the user to adjust the level of the moiré-reduction effect from OFF, Type1 and Type2. Bracketing of all those settings is also possible. Depending on your subject, you can chose high resolution shooting or AA filtered shooting.
PENTAX Original Fine Sharpness and Extra Sharpness
Fine Sharpness gives you a thinner line than the general line, leading to a detail, minute and natural sharpness processing. Extra Sharpness gives you much more thinner line than Fine Sharpness enhancing the outline. These sharpness selection gives you difference to your image especially with the high-resolution images. The sharpness level can be chosen from Custom Image.
Built-in Shake Reduction Mechanism, SR II
As K-1 is a PENTAX DSLR, it has to be SR. To achieve this was a challenge as the sensor size is heavier than that of APS-C. To solve this problem, we have enlarged the actuator of the SR mechanism.
Newly developed SR system is a 5-axis, SR II. This became possible by adding a acceleration sensor. 5-axis SR II covers the shake of yaw, pitch, roll, vertical, and horizontal. Additionally as the algorithm is improved, the shake reduction performance is improved to 5 shutter steps compensation effect. With this new SR mechanism, shake can be stopped even with a high resolution image.
As always, as the SR is built-in, SR is effective with every K-mount lenses. Shift (vertical and horizontal) shake reduction is effective with macro shooting. Roll reduction is effective with extra-wide lenses as the edge of the image will not flow.
As same as K-3II, panning detection is also possible.
Dustproof and Weather-resistant
87 different places including buttons, dials and covers are carefully sealed for durable usage under hard conditions. Battery Grip is also carefully sealed with 47 places.
-10°C Cold-resistant Construction
As usual, environment test has been carried under minus 10 degrees. The electronic circuit and mechanical mechanism operation and responsiveness work perfectly well under this circumstances.
On the front of CMOS sensor glass parts, piezoelectric element is adopted. With a very fast ultrasonic vibration highly adherent dust is strongly removed by preventing dust to be captured in the image.
The ultrasonic vibration mechanism is based on the SR function.
Tough and Durable Body
By covering the metal framework with magnesium alloy, lightweight, highly tough, highly durable and electromagnetic shielded is possible. With the composite construction with metal chassis, which is maintaining the main function, giving a high durability and reliability with punishing circumstances.
Newly Designed 1/8000 sec. High-speed Shutter
To achieve a width of the body size thin as K-3 series, the motor and the parts positioning of the shutter was carefully designed as the spacing was strict because of the big mirror. The shutter unit has cleared the three hundred thousand release tested under actual shooting condition.
Flexible Tilt Type LCD Monitor
Air Gapless LCD Monitor
The space between the LCD panel and protective cover is filled with a special resin for an air gapless LCD monitor. This construction removes light reflection which is caused with the space between LCD panel and protective cover, improving visibility even in bright outdoor conditions.
Newly designed rubber parts to secure monitor from damage. The guard is placed in four corners.
Thanks to the live view function, the latest flexible tilt type LCD monitor can be fully used.
Outdoor View Setting
For comfortable use at any circumstance, we have newly equipped an Outdoor View Setting. With this setting, you can change the brightness of LCD monitor easily, depending on your shooting circumstance.
Operation Assist Light
For comfortable operation under dark situation K-1 has newly placed a Operation Assist Light. The light is placed on upper side of lens mount for easy lens change, backside of LCD to see the buttons of the backside, card slot for easy card change and cable switch attaching or removing.
Built-in GPS/GPS Log/Electronic Compass
K-1 features a built-in GPS function. With K-1 itself, shooting location, facing direction, and the shooting date and time (Coordinated Universal Time) can be recorded in image data. As the GPS button is placed near the pentaprism, it can be easily activated. GPS log function is also adopted which let’s you load the log to PC . K-1 also features the digital compass for easy direction checking.
Coupled with in-body SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism and GPS, this function easily tracks and photographs astronomical body such as stars. The latitude obtained by the GPS function, and camera position (horizontal/vertical tilt and facing direction) detected by the magnetic and acceleration sensors are used to calculate the movement of astronomical body. The CMOS sensor is synchronized with the movement of astronomical body, making it possible to capture stars as points of light not as trails of light even during long exposures.
Built-in digital level accurately detects the horizontal and vertical tilt of camera body. As usual, it can be checked with Live view and LCD monitor. Additionally as K-1 is equipped with transmissive viewfinder, digital level can be confirmed with optical viewfinder. This digital level becomes handy when taking landscapes, architecture etc.
To avoid accidental setting change, K-1 is equipped with a lock function from two types. One is to lock the group of buttons related to exposure and another is to lock the group of four-way controller and the buttons near the four-way controller. You can select which type to be activated when using the lock function.
Automatic Horizon Correction/Composition Adjustment
Thanks to the SR mechanism, this function takes place by shifting and rotating the CMOS image sensor. Automatic Horizon Correction is convenient function which K-1 automatically corrects left or right tilting during hand-held shooting. With Composition Adjustment CMOS image sensor can be slightly moved. This function becomes convenient shooting with tripod. Final adjustment of composition can be done after K-1 is set to the tripod.
A newly added Smart Function can be selected with the newly designed function dial. The setting can be changed from the newly designed setting dial. By using this function, instant setting change is possible supporting photographer not to miss the shutter chance.
Many customization setting is prepared to support the photographers shooting style. By customizing the photographers habit, instinctive operation becomes possible.
Line of frequently used settings can be saved to U1 to U5 for repeated use. Possible saving settings are Exposure Mode (except AUTO), Sensitivity, EV compensation, Drive Mode, White Balance, Custom Image, EV Steps, Sensitivity Steps, Meter Operation Time, Auto EV Compensation and Menu Settings. This mode is placed on Mode dial for instant change.

Newly Designed Floating Mirror Structure
For easy handling in any circumstance, PENTAX has kept designing compact DSLR’s. Even with K-1, suited position was figured for transmissive viewfinder, the height is kept compact. By recomposing the shutter and charger block and mirror action block, to increase the package density as possible for compact body.
To correspond the 35mm full-frame size CMOS sensor, and to achieve approx. 100% field of view, the main mirror and mirror box turned out to be enlarged. To down size the width to be compact, a new mirror box structure was designed. When the mirror swing up, the mirror’s pivot escapes so that the mirror movement will not hit the mount. With this new structure, even though K-1 adopts a big mirror it succeeded to shorten the fringe back which helped to downsize the mirror box width.
Approx. 100% Field of View
To be as a PENTAX DSLR, K-1 has achieved approximately 100% field of view optical viewfinder, with a magnification of 0.7 (50mm F1.4, infinity). Focusing screen is well known Natural Bright Mat III, giving a natural view, easy to figure the peak of focus and bokeh effect.
To cover many information including the cropping frame, transmissive viewfinder is newly adopted. Only the in-focused AF point will be displayed. In-focus is informed with the entire finder lighted to red. The in-focus finder light can be turned off. The information can also be customize depending on your shooting style.
33 point AF System
Thanks to the new SAFOX 12, AF point is increased to 33, with 25 cross AF points and three F2.8 luminance flux linear sensor which you can achieve a precise focus using fast lens.
-3EV low-luminance AF
By using a high-sensitivity AF sensor, the low-luminance limitation is from -3EV (25 center sensors). This helps reduce situations where AF becomes slow in dark scenes, and when AF is affected by highly bright sections in backlit scenes. Also useful for accurately capturing low-contrast subjects.
Limits AF to 9 sensor points, the zone can be moved up, down, left, and right with the movement of the center point. The subject in the zone is automatically detected, focused and tracked.
Expanded Area AF
Select any single point out of the available 33 points. If the focused subject on the single point moves, the surrounding AF points are used to focus. The area can be expanded to 9, 25, and 33 points.
Newly Designed SAFOX 12
AF frame coverage is widened to optimized the 35mm full-frame image size. To achieve this, measuring range is expanded approx. 1.2x from the conventional SAFOX. To arrange the image formation with thick metering luminous flux, reasonable method is newly adopted by reflexing the luminous in the AF unit. By extending the optical path, natural convergent became possible. With this new method, down sizing the AF unit and high image information is achieved.
PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System
With the new PRIME IV and approx. 86,000 pixel RGB metering sensor enables advanced scene analysis based on not only the exposure information but also color, subject’s face, face color, movement etc. Additional to this system, we have adopted the latest AI technology , deep learning system. By using this latest deep learning technology PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System can analyze a step further. This system is activated when you select “Scene Analyze Auto”, assigned to AUTO on the Mode Dial, or “ Auto Select” in Custom Image but as this system uses the data from RGB metering sensor, live view mode is not supported.
Scene Analyze Auto
This mode is assigned to “AUTO” on the Mode Dial. With the current AUTO, scene was detected by PENTAX Real-time Analysis System. The setting for exposure control and image development was automatically selected based on the detected scene. With K-1, when scene is detected the latest AI technology deep learning is also used. With this step further technology, the scene detection is more accurate that K-1 will smoothly decide the setting even with difficult detective scenes.
PENTAX Original Hyper Operation System
Hyper Operation System is a PENTAX original system which has been inherited from the film days.
Generally when you change Exposure Mode you need to change by the mode dial. But with PENTAX Hyper Program System when Mode dial is set to Program you can instantly change from Program, Tv Priority and Av Priority by just twisting the front or back e-dial. The settings changes under the standard program line. With this instant change, you can avoid loosing the shutter chance. Just one push of a Green Button goes back to Program settings.
Hyper Manual can be used during Manual. By pushing the Green Button, the exposure is set to standard. Based on this setting, you are able to freely change the shutter speed or aperture by front or back e-dial. When you use AE Lock, shutter speed or aperture value can be changed with shift operation by keeping the exposure value.
Full range of exposure mode including the PENTAX’s first Scene Analyze Auto, PENTAX’s original TAv mode and USER mode 1 to 5 is featured.
Full range of AE metering is featured based on approx. 86,000 pixel RGB metering sensor, which detects not only brightness but also colors.
Meters the brightness in multiple different zones of the sensor. Exposure will be automatically adjusted even during backlit condition.
Meters the brightness mostly in the center area of the sensor. Exposure will not be adjusted during backlit condition.
Meters the brightness only in a limited area of the very center of the sensor. Useful with a very small subject.
Full range of drive mode is featured to support the creativity: Single Frame Shooting, Continuous Shooting, Self-timer, Remote Control, Bracketing (Exposure bracketing is expanded to ±5), Mirror Lock-up Shooting, Multi-exposure, and Interval Shooting.
Imaging and Video
Custom Image is a mode which gives you a selection of finishing color tone. Saturation, hue, key, contrast and sharpness can be adjustable with some of the selection. For K-1, newly added two finishing tone to the selection.
The scene is detected by the latest AI technology, deep learning, and the K-1 will select the coloring which will suit the scene. With Scene Analyze Auto exposure is also fixed by K-1 but with custom image the exposure is not controlled, so you can fully control the exposure with this mode.
This tone is mainly for after retouching. The color tone is arranged to neutral to minimize saturation. Useful mode for those who arrange retouching with image editing software such as Photoshop.

RICOH developed technology. Convexo-concave or texture of the subject is adjusted to give clarity impression adding more realistic texture and depth. Clarity can be adopted from 8 level (±4) and “0”.
RICOH develop technology. Detects the face, skin type and skin area. Adjust the skin tone with a nice impression. Selection of OFF, Type 1, and Type 2 is available. With Type 1, skin coloring and contrast is adjusted. With Type 2, additional to Type 1 convexo-concave is adjusted to give a silky skin impression look.
HDR High-Dynamic Range
From three different exposure images, single image with a wide tonal range is generated. K-1 automatically align the slight misalignment hand held HDR shooting. Selection of HDR AUTO, HDR1/2/3 which changes the enhancement of the effect, and HDR ADV, which the HDR effect is simulated by using the data of “Clarity”, giving a more drawing type finishing. Exposure bracket value setting ±1/2/3 is also available.
2 to 2000 images can be captured and overlapped to a single image. Three composite mode is possible, Average, Additive and Bright, which the exposure is adjusted when merged. Advanced composition is possible without using a PC.
PENTAX Original CTE
To meet the photographers desire, K-1 carries full selection of white balance including the PENTAX original CTE (Color Temperature Enhancement). With PENTAX original CTE, the algorithm is different from the other white balance setting. With the general white balance, the image is adjusted to neutral gray but with CTE, when a strong color is detected, the white balance is adjusted based on that strong color. Very useful in such scene as very red sunset, outstanding blue sky or fresh green fields.
As usual, selection of digital filter is featured for instant artistic creativity.

In-body RAW Development
In-body RAW development possible. Developed files is saved as separate TIFF or JPEG files. Many settings can be changed including white balance, Custom Image parameters and so on. With this feature, as there is no need for PC, you can work on your RAW files anytime, anywhere. Especially handy during outdoor shooting.
With a shallow depth of field, creative movie with bokeh effect is possible in Full HD quality. Sensitivity is also improved to widen the shooting situation. As the movie is captured with Live View, autofocus is contrast AF. Microphone and headphone terminal available for external accessory use. Wind Noise Reduction first adopted with PENTAX DSLR. Volume of headphone can be changed. From K-1, setting menu is separated with still picture and movie mode for easy setting. As the menu is separated, saving of the setting is also separated, which was not in the recent model.
4K Interval Movie Record and Star Stream
Additional to the normal interval shooting, 4K interval movie is also possible. With this feature, interval shooting picture is saved as a movie. By using this technology, Star Stream is also possible. With this mode the brighter area of the latest shot is added to the previous. By using the fade out setting, the old image is erased. If you take a star using this setting, the final movie looks like a shooting star.
Dual Card Slot
K-1 is equipped with a dual card slot. With two cards, sequential use for continuous recording, save to both for simultaneous recording and separate RAW/JPEG for saving separate recording formats is available, giving you a choice depending on your shooting circumstance.
Built-in Wi-Fi and Image Sync
K-1 is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi, which can be connected to your device such as tablet or smart phone. By using RICOH’s dedicated application Image Sync, below operation is possible from your connected device.
By looking at the live view image on the device, remote shooting is possible. Below settings can be changed or used:
White Balance, Shutter Speed, Aperture Value, Exposure Compensation, ISO, Green button, Live view ON/OFF, Touch AF/Camera AF, File type, JPEG Size, Saving Card Slot
Image of both memory card can be viewed and transferred. When the file is saved to your device, you can post the image to Facebook with single action.
Digital Camera Utility 5
By using Digital Camera Utility 5, high-grade finishing can be done. RAW files can be also developed to JPEG and TIFF files. As this is compatible to K-1, the new function such as Flat tone of Custom Image is useable. When you process Pixel Shift Resolution image, there is a option to turn off the Motion Correction.
Image Transmitter 2
To support many kinds of shooting situation, K-1 is compatible with Image Transmitter 2. With this software, tethering shooting becomes possible.
To fully use PENTAX K mount lenses, K-1 is equipped with Crop mode with three settings.
AUTO: Capturing image area is automatically set depending on the mounted lens.
FF: Capturing image area is set to 35mm full-frame size.
APS-C: Capturing image area is set to APS-C size.
With Optical Viewfinder
When you use APS-C setting with the optical viewfinder, cropping frame comes out.
With Live View
Imaging area of the crop setting is displayed.
Lens Correction/ Fringe Correction
By setting this function, optical affect such as distortion, peripheral illumination aberration, chromatic aberration of magnification caused by lens character is corrected in-body. As a result high resolution image can be captured from the center to edge. With RAW development, fringe correction is also possible
Corrects the resolution loss caused by luminous diffraction phenomenon, which occurs when stopping down the lens, by image processing. With this function appropriate process takes place based on the lens data information, which gives you maximum of approx. 2 shutter steps compensation effect. With this function, deep depth of field photo can be taken without worries.
